The present research is devoted to the analysis of the usage of metaphors and similes in the novel by G. Durrell “My family and other animals”.The aim of the paper is to explore and analyse the metaphors and similes in Gerald Durrell's novel "My Family and Other Animals"; to identify the features of the idiostyle; to note the patterns, similarities and differences in the metaphors and similes collected.In this paper we first present the notions of similes and metaphors then we analyze classification of the scholars such as I. R. Galperin, S. Glucksberg and the main functions of metaphors classified by V. K. Kharchenko. Also there are the definition of idiostyle and brief biography of G. Durrell given. After that, we consider some research on metaphor and simile in the novels by G. Durrell. In the analytical part we describe metaphors and similes and present the results of the research. In the final analysis, it is concluded that the G. Durrell’s idiostyle is formed mostly under influence of his work as a biologist.
